By the Numbers: Michelle answers your questions about her new Enneagram Series

What drew you to the Enneagram concept?

I loved that it was this framework that helps you explore yourself. The deeper I dove into it, the more I could understand myself and the people in my life. That presents an incredible challenge for creating art. My work has always explored emotion through color, so it was interesting translating these nine types into my compositions .

Which number was the most challenging to create?

haha probably seven, which is what I am! I had a pretty good sense of what I each composition would be, but I reworked the seven several times! Maybe it’s like creating a self portrait, but, it was very revealing, vulnerable, and challenging.

How would you describe your work to those unfamiliar with it?

I primarily work through color - blocking, striping, layering - I am always exploring how color can influence the viewers emotions. I usually use a mix of hard and soft lines, and  expressive automatic gestures, I usually work with acrylic on canvas, and I love to paint on a huge canvas!

Do you find it more challenging to begin a work or to finish one?

hmmm I think finishing is more challenging. Pieces can change so much, I start with an initial idea and then something else will come to me. I’ve gotten more disciplined at staying on message, but finishing can still be a challenge. I also definitely experience imposter syndrome and sometimes that keeps me from finishing a work, I feel inclined to just start over.
Has your work always taken on the stylistic approach that it has today?

My work has always had a certain aesthetic approach dating back to my early illustration days and my first prints. I think I have always been drawn to a bold and assertive aesthetic across any medium I explore. It is more about the gesture, mood, and narrative and what it calls for. So the enneagram series was a great creative challenge!
